Lucid Nonsense

The Waiting Game

Wednesday, 15 July 2009

Eight weeks or so. Hopefully.

Could be a bit longer.

Really Apple need to hurry up a bit because until Snow Leopard is released I’m just sat here playing with beta versions that I can’t talk about.

Which is reasonably frustrating.

In addition to that, until Snow Leopard is released even ADC members, with our massive insight into Apple’s development processes (hah!), don’t know exactly what’s happened to ZFS. Furthermore the Mac OS Forge ZFS build is over a year old, and it doesn’t seem likely that we’ll get a new build until the final release. Frankly as much as I find filesystems fascinating once you’ve had 14 months with a slightly unfinished build, it would be nice to have something that fixed some of the glaring bugs and added some of the features that Solaris users have been enjoying for a while*.

Ho hum.

*For instance having the choice to set ZFS so the system doesn’t kernel panic if you actually disconnect a disk. Or just having it work with Spotlight. Or being able to browse snapshots… you get the idea anyway.
